There is just something majestic about the black Pit Bull. While in its purest black state they are quite rare variations are quite extensive mostly of the piebald nature.
Little is written about the black Pit Bull in the history of the breed. This is likely due in part to the lack of discrimination it has faced that other lines have unfortunately had to deal with.
While many will taut that the Pit Bull has historically been bred to fight this is a myth. One of the most well known dog men in history John Colby stated that less than 10% would ever possess the qualities needed to make in such an endeavor. Given that fewer than 10% of Pit Bulls were ever fought even during the period of legal fighting it is unfair to say that this is what the breed was historically bred to do. If the standard of measure is based on the minority of a specimen then as humans have also been bred to be murderers, child molesters and thieves.
The truth about the history of the breed is that it has been historically bred to work. While some have used it to work in the fighting arena the majority have used it to work in other manners such as guarding, pest control, hunting and family companionship. While it cannot be disputed that the Pit Bull is the pinnacle of athleticism, drive and loyalty as enthusiasts we should be aware of the full breadth of its history and not perpetuate the bred to fight myth. This myth is the single greatest cause for distrust in society today of the Pit Bull breed. Irresponsible and ignorant individuals who perpetuate this myth bear the burden also of causing the larger public to seek out what is known as breed specific legislation ( BSL ), which acts to make owning Pit Bulls illegal or severely limited.
